They actually built their log traps to fight off a massive creature called a Gorax. Those huge predators were created in concept art for Return of the Jedi, and were then fully realized in the Ewoks: Caravan of Courage made for TV movie. But one episode of Forces of Destiny showed the Ewoks joining forces with Luke and Leia to fight off a Gorax with log traps not long after the Battle of Endor and the destruction of the second Death Star. So no, the traps weren’t hastily built to fight the Empire.
