Report from the Holocron of Xela. Description: In A New Hope during the trench run, Biggs, the best pilot in the galaxy, tells Porkins to eject before his X-Wing explodes. Eject into space? How does that make sense?? The answer comes to us from Legends sources, specifically the excellent X-Wing books by Michael Stackpole. The flight suits worn by Rebel pilots could create magnetic fields around their bodies similar to the fields seen on capital ship hangars that kept their atmosphere contained inside. So a personal magnetic field would allow pilots to eject and stay alive in the vacuum of space…for a time. But a small chance is better than no chance at all. That’s the in-universe reason. But honestly I think the real reason is that George Lucas didn’t care about scientific reality when he wrote his movies. In the Star Wars Archives book he straight up said, “In my world there is air in outer space.
