During production George Lucas decided the heroes too easily escaped the Death Star. He considered Chewbacca and C-3PO as potential casualties, but decided Obi-Wan was the best choice, since the character didn’t have much to do for the rest of the film, and it would help illustrate the mysticism of the Force.
