In a 2016 interview with the Star Wars Report podcast, Pablo Hidalgo discussed writing Lor San Tekka’s backstory in The Force Awakens, where he stated that the old man on Jakku was part of the Church. He revealed the Church of the Force was an idea Lucas had for the television series, Star Wars Underworld. They were initially an underground group of people during the time of the Empire that remembered the Jedi Order and continued to carry their ideals despite not being Force-sensitive.
